Based on a 1950s reference photo, “Robbie Rebel” reimagines a familiar figure through a contemporary Black lens. Growing up, there was always that one white boy who hung around the neighborhood—always down, always a little wild. The candy cigarette in his mouth blurs the line between play and rebellion, innocence and influence. This painting bridges eras, nodding to a time long past while echoing a character many of us still recognize.
